Story One-Hundred and Eight Ends December 20th
"I just LOVE the winter holidays," Kalinda the Kyrii said to her
friend Tanya as they walked down the snowy boulevard. "Snow falling lightly on the ground, beautiful
wrapped gifts, everyone in a peaceful mood. Sitting by the fire and drinking hot chocolate."
"Oh yes," her Usul friend agreed, giggling. "The cheesy, overplayed music in the air, the gaudy
decorations in all the shops."
Kalinda laughed, "That too." She stared at yet another giant Christmas prop that now crowded the
stores.
The Usul sighed, "Where DO those things come from anyways? They're far too big to be stored in the
backroom of the shops all year. They just seem to come out of nowhere." Her eyes fell across a giant
gift-wrapped cardboard box that stood at least four feet high. "They're really not necessary
either. I mean, do we REALLY need to stare at a 5 foot fiberglass candycane to get us in the
spending mood?"
Kalinda shrugged, "I guess that's what the storekeepers think." She knocked her knuckles against a
giant fiberglass Reindorf in front of the Petpet store in Neopia Central. A hollow sound echoed
through it, only reinforcing its lifelessness.
Tanya and Kalinda turned their backs on the store, wondering if they should try the shops across
the street. "Argh. All this shopping is making me tired," the Kyrii sighed, leaning back onto the
fiberglass decoration...
She fell over backwards onto the icy ground, too late to realise it wasn't there anymore. "Huh?
Where did it go?" she gasped.
Tanya looked around in bewilderment. "That's strange! I don't see it anywhere."
Kalinda brushed the snow off herself and got up. She bent down to pick up the bags of presents
she had dropped and stopped. "My bags are gone!" she shouted.
Tanya looked over. "Oh my goodness! Mine are too!" Realising her hands were now empty.
"Who could've stolen them right out of my hands like that?"
Kalinda looked around, and noticed strange tracks leading off. "I don't know, but let's find out!"...

The tracks soon disappeared under the falling snow, so Kalinda and Tanya ran down the street
towards the police station. The least they could do was
report the theft. Maybe they would do a better job investigating.
When they got to the station an old Grarrl was behind the main desk.
"Can I help you?" he asked.
"Yes," Tanya answered. "We would like to report a robbery. We were out shopping and all of our
packages were stolen right out from under our noses."
"I see," said the Grarrl. "Can you tell me what the perpetrator looked like?"
"Well... no. We didn't see him. One minute our things were there, and the next they were gone.
We really don't know what to do."
"Well, I'll write this up, but there really isn't much we can do without knowing what we are looking
for."
The girls described their packages, explaining what was in the bags, and sadly left. They walked down the
street looking for any sign of where the thief may have gone.
As they walked along, the girls started to notice that something was wrong. Things just didn't seem right,
and Kalinda was starting to get a very bad feeling. Then it struck her. There were no Christmas
decorations anywhere. Somehow they had all disappeared.
"Excuse me," she said to a passing Mynci, "but what happened to all the Christmas decorations?"
"Huh?" The Mynci said, looking around confused. "Oh, I guess Christmas is over. I don't see
any decorations."
"No, no!" exclaimed Kalinda, "Christmas isn't over, the decorations are stolen!"
The Mynci laughed, "Don't be silly. Who would steal Christmas decorations? I don't really remember
having Christmas this year, but since the decorations are down, it must be over. Now if you'll excuse me..."
Every other pet had the same reaction as the Mynci.
Tanya looked desperately at her friend. "Now what are we going to do? Just because the stores aren't
decorated, it's suddenly not Christmas anymore? This is ridiculous!"
Come on, Tanya. Let's keep looking... someone MUST believe us." The two friends continued to trudge through
the falling snow...

...until they came upon the Book Shop. Not wanting to stay there, Kalinda started moving on but
Tanya stopped her.
"Um... perhaps we can go inside the Book Shop. Just because Christmas is over, doesn't mean
it's not winter," said the cold Usul.
"But Christmas isn't over! Remember?" asked Kalinda.
Sorry, but most of us are used to setting our clocks according to the stores. I once saw a Gadgadsbogen setting
when it was too early for Gadgadsbogen, but Neopets came to buy souvenirs and booked trips to Mystery Island anyway.
Stores are such a big impact in our--"
Okay Tanya, you're starting to rant. We can go inside if you want, follow me," Kalinda said as she
pulled her friend through the doors. The little Christmas display of books was gone. Titles like
Christmas
Kiko Story and A Grundo Christmas had been on a little table that morning. Now, they weren't.
"Sorry, we won't get a restock for another few minutes," said the shopkeeper as he leafed through a
copy of Nimmo of Doom.
"Oh, we're just here to warm up. It's awfully chilly. Christmas is nearly here after all!" said
Kalinda. The last sentence was said loudly to see if the shopkeeper knew anything. The Nimmo looked up.
"You wish. Christmas isn't for another year! It seems like it went by so fast... anyway, there are some
old books nobody buys that you can read at the back while you're warming up," the shopkeeper said as he
pointed to a small table with a few old books on it at the back end of the store. Tanya and Kalinda walked
over to see what there was. They passed copies of books about everything! Gormball, Petpets,
Meridell, Dr. Sloth...you name it, it was there.
"Hey, I've never heard of this book," said Tanya as she picked up an old orange book from the
table. She blew some dust off of it.
"That's weird... it doesn't even have a title! How about this one?" Kalinda asked while picking
up a very thick purple book. Kalinda blew off some dust and gasped. The title was Holiday Demons.
"Demons?" Tanya asked. asked Tanya. Kalinda shrugged her shoulders. She slowly opened the front cover.
On the inside was a big picture of...

...a ghastly, ethereal looking creature, with glowing emerald eyes and wickedly sharp
claws. Kalinda gasped, dropping the book in
fright. It landed with a thump, falling with its cover open. Both Neopets stared down
at the book in shock, then slowly looked at each other.
"What in Neopia is that?" Tanya asked Kalinda with a quiver in her voice.
"I have no idea," Kalinda answered, "but it certainly doesn't look too friendly!"
Tanya agreed, nodding ferverently. Both
looked at the book doubtfully.
"Well... I suppose we had better put it back, then." Tanya suggested finally.
"Right, of course." Kalinda agreed. Neither one moved.
"So, why don't you pick it up, Tanya? Seeing as you're closest..." Kalinda said,
trying to act casual.
Tanya glared at her.
"You're the one who dropped it. Why don't you pick it up?!?
Kalinda looked at the book nervously. "All right, fine... no big deal right?"
The demon drawing leered up at her as she reached
out to grab the cover.
"Hey! Get away from that!" Kalinda whirled around in suprise and fear to see
the shopkeeper standing behind her, suddenly angry.
Tanya was still recovering from shock as the Nimmo scooped up the book hurriedly
and faced the two frightened friends. "Where did you find this?" he demanded.
"This book isn't for sale!"
"It was on the table here," Tanya stammered. Kalinda nodded in agreement,
staring at the furious shopkeeper.
He narrowed his
eyes, as if trying to see if they were lying. Kalinda and Tanya fidgeted uncomfortably
under his glare. Finally, he said, "It shouldn't have been there at all. This book is
very precious, there's only a few of
these in all of Neopia!" He nodded at their
suprise. "Yes," he continued, "very valuable indeed. Now, if you're quite done warming up,
I'd appreciate it if you'd leave my shop."
Kalinda and Tanya found themselves back out in the freezing snow, feeling confused.
"What was that all about?" Tanya
wondered. Kalinda could only shrug helplessly in reply...

..."I really don't know. If we only had some asparagus, everything would make so much more sense!"
exclaimed Kalinda. Tanya looked at her with a puzzled expression.
"Where did that come from? Asparagus?" asked Tanya.
"It's the Word of the Day. You always use the Word of the Day whenever you can," replied Kalinda.
"You're weird. Anyways, I think we can figure it out by getting another copy of that book, so we can
read up about the creature," said Tanya. Kalinda nodded in agreement.
"I know! We could buy some asparagus, and then--"
"QUIT IT WITH THE ASPARAGUS! HOW IS ASPARAGUS GOING TO HELP US?" screamed Tanya.
Then suddenly, with a *POOF*... an Air Faerie appeared in front of them.
"That's the Word of the Day!" the Air Faerie said. "Wow, I thought nobody paid attention to that. Here, I'll give you the
item of your choice," she said.
"We want a Tornado Ri--"
"How about a copy of Holiday Demons?" suggested Tanya as she stepped on Kalinda's foot. The Faerie
nodded and shut her eyes. She held her hands out and muttered some words. Suddenly, a copy of the familiar book
appeared in her hands... she handed it to Tanya.
"Bye!" said the Air Faerie and *POOFED* out of existence again.
Kalinda grinned and Tanya and said, "Well, that's one way to speed up this story!"
Tanya immediately opened the book. The scary beast's
picture leered back at her. Its bright green eyes stared back at the two Neopets.
"Hey, there's a little caption below the picture," said Kalinda as she pointed to a few words
under the demon's picture. Tanya nodded and started to read.
"It says: The monster you see in the picture above is none other than the infamous..."

...Asparagus Demon!"
"AAUUGGH! Again with the asparagus! Will this nightmare ever end?!?!?" Tanya shouted so loud a
flock of birds took off and flew to The Lost Desert.
And she thought I was wierd! Kalinda thought as she watched her distraught friend regain sanity.
"Anyways," Tanya continued, "this demon has been known to steal holidays such as Fleye Day and Asparagus Day."
"Asparagus day?" Kalinda asked. "Fleye Day?" I've never heard of it."
"That's because the demon stole it!" Kalinda exclaimed loudly. Kalinda was pleased that she had
figured it out but then she realized something else. . "Oh no! The Asparagus Demon has stolen Chris-..
uh... Chri- um.... oh yeah! Christmas! We have to stop him!
"But what can we do?" Tanya inquired. Kalinda looked thoughtful for a second.
"I know!" she began,"We can save up enough Neopoints to go buy some asparachucks!"
"What do asparachucks have to do with saving Christmas?" Tanya asked, looking confused.
"Nothing. They're just made with asparagus."
"Quit fooling around!!!" Tanya yelled. "We need to do something to save Christmas! So, we could...
no, no that wouldn't work... oh, I know! We can start by..."
"Let me read the rest first," Kalinda interrupted. "The Asparagus Demon bares no resemblense to its namesake.
It is an ethereal demon that can inhabit inanimate objects, and also grasp memories of holidays from the minds
of Neopets. Now, knowing this, we must be clever and come up with a plan to save Christmas, or it may be
forgotten forever!"...

..."What are you talking about, you fools? You can never stop me!" said a voice that was as cold as
the Snowager. "I am a supreme evil, I am the Asparagus Demon! Just try! Everyone has forgotten Christmas,
you are the only ones who have not! But I will take care of that soon..." laughed a fiberglass Chrismas Chia
decoration, which suddenly imploded into dust, leaving the shadowy form of the Asparagus Demon floating above them.
"We will never forget Christma- uhh, what was I saying?" Kalinda asked, looking dazed.
"Oh no! Kalinda, snap out of it!" Tanya screeched. "You!" she said, now turning towards the Asparagus Demon.
"You did this to her! Let her go, or I'll, I'll-"
"You'll do what?" the Asparagus Demon said, his eyes ablaze. He snapped, and Kalinda floated through the air,
zooming towards him and into his hand.
"Kalinda! Let her go you monster!" Tanya screamed. "Let go of my friend!"
"Hmm, I seem to have a great advantage over you. I have your friend, and no one else will believe you. So
tell you what, I'll make a deal with you," the Asparagus Demon said smiling.
"What's the deal?" Tanya hissed.
"If you can find a way to stop me in the next three parts of this story, then I'll restore Christmas and
give Kalinda back."
"But if I don't?"
"You will end up like everybody else," the Asparagus Demon said slyly. "And just to be fair, I'll give you a
clue. The clue is...

The demon cleared his throat and recited with a grin that was yellow from eating too much asparagus:
"If you want things to go your way,
Then listen to what I have to say:
Would you believe we have met face to face?
The question, of course,
Is in what place?
If you can figure it out,
(Which I highly doubt,)
Then Christmas will come once again!"
Tanya rolled her eyes, "Is that the best poem you can come up with?"
The Demon's grin faltered. "You don't like my poem? But I worked on it all week! Oh well, we'll see
who has the last laugh here!"
From the Asparagus Demon's clutches, Kalinda scratched her head, "What's Christmas?"
For a moment, both the Asparagus Demon and Tanya just stared at her, having forgotten she was there.
"Anyway," Tanya said confidently, breaking the silence, "This'll be a snap! I'm great with riddles!"
I know nothing about riddles! Tanya thought to herself, I'm done for!
"We'll see..." The Asparagus Demon repeated, with grin back in place. "Now you only have two more story
parts to figure it out! I'll see you in two more entries; but whether it's to give Christmas back, or to
wipe it from your memory, is up to you!" the demon cackled as he and Kalinda sped off into the cold grey sky...

...Tanya quickly searched her pockets for a bit of paper and a pen to write down the riddle before
she forgot it, but could only find a crumpled up receipt from their missing purchases. But
even their stolen gifts were missing from the receipt! All it said was 'sold'.
She continued to search her pockets, finally pulling out a dark red lipstick. Tanya shrugged, and
wrote out the riddle as best as she could remember on the back of the receipt with the lipstick.
"Would you believe we have met face to face? The question, of course, is in what place?" she muttered. "That's the
bit I need to figure out. Who did we meet today that could possibly be the Asparagus Demon?"
Tanya turned the receipt over to where it still said 'sold' and began thinking back over the day's events.
She wrote down the names of everyone they had encountered since the theft.
"We've only talked to four people today! The old Grarrl, the Mynci, the Nimmo shopkeeper and the Air Faerie,"
Tanya said to herself. "Oh, this is hopeless, I hardly think it's any of them."
She thought back to before things started to go missing, and remembered her and Kalinda's conversations
and how her face had been filled with joy at the thought of the holiday that had now been wiped from memory.
She realized how desperate her search had become, and that if she didn't do anything about it, her best
friend and favourite holiday would be lost forever.
Tanya looked around the snowy boulevard, empty of Christmas joy and rushed shoppers, missing Christmas
trees and decorations... Suddenly something clicked.
She re-read the riddle the Asparagus Demon had told her. 'Would you believe we have met face to face?'
Something was beginning to make sense, but Tanya didn't quite have it. She picked up the Holiday Demons
book and read the caption again. 'It is an ethereal demon that can inhabit inanimate objects'... "That's it!
What if I was wrong... what if it doesn't matter who we've talked to..."
Tanya remembered the four foot gift-wrapped cardboard box, the five foot fiberglass candycane, and the
giant fiberglass Raindorf...

...She spoke the words aloud in a bold voice. She knew she was right this time, she just knew it.
"Asparagus Demon, I have seen you face to face. You transformed yourself into a fiberglass Raindorf. I can remember looking that Raindorf straight in the eyes. It was you."
Suddenly a voice swept through her head. An icy voice that was as powerful as the leader of the Darigan army.
"You are right my friend. Completely right."
The voice suddenly seemed real and there in front of her stood the giant fiberglass Raindorf. Its eyes were glowing emerald green just like the eyes of the Asparagus Demon.
"I'm right... so what happens next?" Her voice quivered as she spoke the words.
Without any further words, the Asparagus Demon transformed from the Raindorf into himself. Then he raised his arms. A dark purple cloud formed atop of him and suddenly exploded into a huge clear orb half the size of Tanya. She looked deep inside.
"Oh my goodness!" she gasped with delight.
She could see the whole boulevard celebrating Christmas. People were laughing and joking around all dressed in festive clothing, the shops had Christmas gifts displayed in the windows, and snowflakes filled the air.
"W-W-What is this?" stammered Tanya as she peered into the orb.
"It's Christmas as it should be," replied the demon. "You know what you have to do now don't you?"
He beckoned Tanya towards the orb and smiled weakly. He was hoping he wouldn't have had to do this. He had lost and she had won. There was nothing he could do now. Christmas had returned.
"I will never bother you again," he said before disappearing into thin air.
Without looking back, she walked into the misty white depth of the orb. Then, everything went white. She could hear corny Christmas tunes playing in the background and the sound of bells ringed through her ears.
Hours seemed to have passed when Tanya had finally awoke. She lay face down in the crispy white snow. The music was still playing and the bells could still be heard jangling.
"Are you okay?" asked a friendly voice as two gloved hands lifted her off the ground. She turned to find a festively dressed Scorchio. "Cheer up," he said, "It's Christmas!"
"I'm fine, thank you," she replied, just glad to have Christmas back.
She looked around her to find that the whole place was just as it was in the orb. She also found what was causing the sound of the bells. An Kyrii was bounding across the snow dressed in festive clothing. She wore a collar, and attached to it were two gold bells.
"Whoo hoo!" yelled a familiar voice. "It's Christmas! Yay!"
She could recognize that voice anywhere. It was Kalinda and she came running up towards Tanya a smile spread across her face.
"I'm so glad it's Christmas!" shouted Kalinda excitedly.
"Me too," replied Tanya. "Me too."
