Story One-Hundred and Forty-Three Ends September 5th
The blue Zafara quietly opened the door and peered
in. Nervously gripping the handle of her lunchbox, she clutched it tightly
while stepping into the classroom. The teacher looked up and smiled kindly.
"Welcome to NeoSchool," she said cheerfully. The other students watched the Zafara
as she approached their teacher. "What is your name, so I can mark you on
the roll call?"
"M-my name is Karli."
"It's very nice to meet you Karli. Would you like to introduce yourself to your
classmates?" Karli froze in horror. She had been dreading this. As an only pet,
she wasn't used to being around others in social situations.
She gulped and began. "M-m-my name is Karli,
and I'm a Zafara." Some of the students giggled at the obviousness of her
comment. Shaking even more, Karli
continued. "I-I e-enjoy p-playing NeoQuest and w-writing." She heard a couple
of the boys in the back whisper "nerd". Shaking so hard that the thermos was
rattling in her lunchbox, Karli tried to continue. "And, and, I uhh... um...
uh..." the rattling grew louder.
"Well, I think that's enough," said the teacher, stepping up to rescue her.
"Go ahead and take a seat now." She then dropped her voice to a reassuring
whisper. "Don't worry, it's everyone's first day." Thankful, but still
traumatised, Karli simply bobbed her head, then sat in the corner farthest from
everyone.
The class slowly began to fill, until soon every seat had been taken. Karli
was sure no one had done such an awful job introducing themselves as she had,
though.
Karli was so relieved when the lunchtime bell rang, but she waited for the entire
classroom to empty first. She couldn't bear the thought of accidentally bumping
someone while getting through the door. Finally she left, followed by the worried look
of her teacher.
Karli found the most remote spot in the lunch area, and settled down for a quiet
lunch. She was just about to take a bite into her sandwich, when she heard a voice
behind her...

..."Hey, NERD! How's the lunch?" A scary-looking Grarrl smirked as his two
lackeys, a Korbat and a Lupe, snickered.
"I-It's f-f-fine, thanks." Karli stuttered as a bead of sweat dropped.
"Maybe I'll find out for myself." The Grarrl grabbed the sandwich and chomped
down, while the other two guffawed. "You're right. It is 'f-f-fine,'" he mocked.
The three bullies laughed, and were in the process of picking through the rest
of Karli's lunch, when an Aisha walked up.
"Leave her alone, Trevor," the Aisha glared at the Grarrl and shoved him. "I've
had enough of your trash. Buzz off." The Grarrl seemed disheartened, but then smirked.
"See you later, nerd." He strutted off, followed by the two other bullies. The
Aisha smiled down at Karli.
"Are you okay? You have to stand up to Trevor if you ever want him to leave you
alone. When I first got here this morning, he stole my crayons... but after I kicked him in
the shin, he left me alone." The Aisha handed Karli's remaining lunch to her. "I'm Sal." Karli
gave a weak smile.
"I'm Karli. Thanks for helping me." The Aisha chuckled and sat down next to Karli.
"No prob. Now, I'm hungry. Let's eat." the Aisha said, handing Karli half of her
sandwich. The Zafara was surprised to realize she enjoyed lunch, and was having a
wonderful time talking to the Aisha. They seemed to have quite a lot of common interests.
Soon the bell rang, announcing the end of lunch.
"Well, I'll see you later." Karli said as she walked into her classroom. She sat
at her desk, feeling more confident than before. That's when a shadow fell on her desk.
"Well, nerd. Looks like there's no Sal here to save you now." Trevor the Grarrl
was back, flanked by his usual cronies. They sneered at her, but thankfully,
had to sit down when the teacher arrived.
"Now class, we are going to be studying the history of Neopia!" She beamed as
everyone made faces at her. "Now, let's begin with the founder of Neo-"
"Mrs. Teacher person?" A young Kau in the front asked as she raised a hoof. The
school children tittered at the way she'd addressed the teacher.
"Yes, Darla?" the teacher asked, looking up from her lesson as she answered the Kau.
"My pencil case is missing!" The Kau's lower lip trembled as she rummaged through
her desk. "My momma bought it for me with her very last few Neopoints... I have
to find it!"
"Well," sighed the teacher, "everyone help look." Karli searched around for the
pencil case, to no avail. Upon returning to her seat, she plopped down, only
to jump back up when she realized she'd just sat on something. Karli reached
for the object, then gasped... it was a pencil case, with Darla's name on it.
"Mrs. Teacher person! Look what Karli has in her paw!"...

..."Karli, I am surprised at you!" the teacher exclaimed with a look of anger.
Karli was terrified. They all thought she had stolen the pencil case! Her tail was
shaking, and tears were welling up in her eyes.
"B-b-but, I didn't take the pencil case!" Karli tried to explain. "I was only
about to sit down when I found it on my chair, and that's when--"
"There is no excuse for this, Karli! You must take full responsibility for your
actions! Go wait outside the classroom until I call you back in!"
There was a loud chuckle from the back of the room. Karli looked over to see
Trevor and his lackeys, laughing with a look of pleasure and amusement. Karli
bit her lips, trying as hard as she could not to cry. The teacher let out a
sigh (as if very disappointed), and sternly motioned for Karli to leave,
then continued on with the lesson. Karli ran out of the room and threw
herself on the hallway floor. That's when the tears started pouring out.
I hate school! Karli thought to herself. "I will never come back here
again!" she swore, continuing to sob.
Suddenly, Karli heard footsteps. She dried her eyes and faced the wall, so
that whomever walked by wouldn't see her. The footsteps became louder and louder.
"Karli, is that you?" a voice questioned. Karli slowly turned around to find
Sal standing behind her. She was relieved to see that it was her Aisha friend
from lunch, and not somebody like Trevor.
"Karli, what happened?!" Sal said in shock, obviously understanding that Karli
had just been crying. There were tear marks on her fur, and her eyes were all red.
Karli tried to explain as she started sobbing again.
"T-t-hen teacher t-thought," she blurted out through her sobs, "but w-wasn't me
it w-w-was T-Trevor! T-t-then--"
"Karli, I can't understand anything you are saying!" Sal tried to calm Karli down.
"I'm sure whatever it is, it will all be fine by tomorrow." she said reassuringly.
Karli and Sal both heard the sound of more footsteps. Karli didn't
bother to look, caught up in all her tears. Sal peered down the hall.
"Uh, Karli..." Sal said quickly, as if in a hurry. "I've got to get back to class.
See you at recess... bye!"
Karli dried her eyes yet again, and saw a rather large shadow in front of her.
"You must be Karli," a loud voice boomed...

Karli spun around to find herself face-to-belly with a very large blue Grarrl.
She was instantly reminded of how Grarrls were often bullies, like Trevor, and flinched.
To her amazement, though, the Grarrl just gave a booming laugh. "There's no need to be afraid,"
he said. His tone was so reassuring that the Zafara opened an eye to peek up through
her arms (which she'd wrapped around her head) and look at him. "My name is Mr. Mickens, and
I'm the principal of this school. Why don't we step into my office and discuss this matter?"
She didn't have much time consider his offer, for the principal swiftly turned and headed in
the direction of his office, leaving her with the option of either running away before he'd
noticed that she'd taken off, or following him. Having no idea as to where she would possibly
go, Karli hustled to catch up with the big blue Grarrl, struggling to keep pace with his
enormous strides.
Mr. Mickens's office turned out to only be about a half-dozen doors from Karli's classroom,
but for the anxious Zafara, the walk seemed to take ages. The fur on her back stood on edge
as she entered the principal's office, somewhat like the strange hairdo that Moehogs always
sported. Karli tried to calm her nerves as she sat down in the worn red chair in front
of Mr. Mickens's desk. The cushy chair was comfortable, except for a spring sticking into her back.
"So," the principal began once they were both seated. "Tell me all about this little incident," he
said, folding his hands upon the desk that he sat behind. "Where did you learn such behavior? Did
your owner teach you to steal, so you could earn money for your family? Could you have learned it
as a homeless pet on the streets?"
The questions that Mr. Mickens was asking shocked Karli, and her jaw nearly dropped. "N-n-no, sir!"
she exclaimed, her nervousness causing her tongue to trip over the simple word. "N-nothing like that...
my owner is honest, and nice... and kind! She taught me to be that way, t-t-too! And... I was never homeless!
I've been with her for as long as I can remember!"
Mr. Mickens listened attentively. He nodded when she was finished, and she hoped that was an indication that he'd
believed her story--she was telling the truth, after all. However, that wasn't the case. "If what you say is true,"
principal Mickens said, "then why would you steal Darla's pencil case?"
By now Karli was angry, which was rare for her. She was sick and tired of the way she'd been treated
at this school. First, some bullies had teased her and taken her lunch. Then, she had been kicked out
of class for something she didn't do... and now she was being falsely accused by the principal! Well,
that did it... it was about time that she gave him a piece of her mind.
"I didn't steal Darla's pencil case!" she shouted, jumping up from her chair, swirling with rage.
"My owner bought me my OWN school supplies... why would I need someone else's?!? I CAN tell you,
however, who did it... yes I can! It was that louse Trevor and his goons! They stole the pencil
case, then set me up by putting it on my chair. You wanna know why? Because they don't like me,
and call me a nerd! Why don't you ask HIM what happened to the pencil case?"
Her anger spent, Karli collapsed back into the chair, panting heavily from her rant. To her surprise,
Mr. Mickens just laughed again. After shooting him a "What's so funny?" look, Mr. Mickens responded with an answer
that REALLY caused Karli's jaw to drop.
"My son would never do such a thing..."

...why, Trevor has always been a polite, well mannered Grarrl," stated Mr.
Mickens. He chuckled heartily, seeing the look on Karli's face. She couldn't
believe her ears.
"B-but," Karli stuttered. "He did all those things, I saw it with my own two
eyes..." The Zafara gave up, slouching low on her armchair. It was no use trying
to convince him.
In the next couple of minutes, the principal eyed her carefully, as if to see
whether she'd been lying. Finally, after a great deal of time, he said, "Tell you what,
Karli... if you can convince me that Trevor is behind this by the end of the day,
then you're off the hook," She beamed with excitement at this statement. "However,
a more serious punishment shall be brought upon you if you can't. You know, it's not
like my son to do a thing like this." Luckily for Karli, the bell rang to indicate
recess, saving her from the principal's boring lecture. She bolted out of the door,
desperate to find Sal.
* * * * *
"So that's what you have to do?" asked Sal after Karli told her the story.
"Yeah, this should be no problem!" exclaimed Karli. "I mean, how hard is it to
catch a bully in the act?" They poked their heads around the corner, and watched
Trevor on the football field. Surprising, the Grarrl did not appear to appear to
have abused anybody, or used foul play. In fact, he was doing quite well, and with his help,
the team won the game.
Sal paused for a minute, then glanced at Karli. "Okay then, time for plan-"
"Smash two nerdy looking girlies in a game of teatherball," interrupted a voice
behind them. There, right behind their backs, was a group of Trevor's cronies.
"Uh, you did account for this, did you?" gulped Sal as the bullies approached
them.
* * * * *
The two girls were now officially tied up to a teather pole. The rules of the game
were simple, as the Korbat explained. Hit the nerds with the ball as many times as you
can before the bell rings. Whoever hits the most wins the game. "Just my luck,"
moaned Karli as a teatherball bumped her head. This went on for several minutes,
until the bell finally rang. The bullies left the battered friends outside,
tied to the pole. Luckily, Karli had a backup...

...Zafaras don't have spikes on their tails for no reason. She scraped the ropes
with her spikes until they were free. Already late now, Karli and Sal hurried to class. By the
time Karli stepped inside the classroom, she was out of breath. Everyone turned to look at her,
and she wished she could just disappear. Walking to her seat, Karli could feel the students'
eyes on her. That's when the teacher spoke. "Karli, will you tell the class why you're
interrupting their work by being late?"
Karli studdered, "I... um... I got h-hit by a tetherball at recess, and had to, um...
go to the nurse." She couldn't tell the truth; it was far too embarrassing.
She sat in her seat and did the assignment on the board. Slumping in her chair, Karli
peeked at the clock. She watched it go around once, wishing it would hurry up.
*Riiiiiiinnng* Finally! she thought. The Zafara quickly gathered her stuff,
sped out the door, and raced through the hallway. She was just about to jump down the
stairs, when her backpack got caught on something and held her back, almost choking her.
While hanging in mid-air, Karli turned to see Trevor holding onto her backpack.
Trevor laughed, "Hi nerd. What's the matter? Can't you touch the ground? Don't
worry, I'll help you!" He slung the backpack off her shoulders and raced past as
she hit the floor hard. Grimacing in pain, the Zafara quickly got up to chase after him.
Sal saw her and caught up.
"What's going on?" Sal asked. "Don't tell me Trevor's involved."
Karli kept running. She saw Trevor go outside, onto the playground.
When she got there, the Grarrl was nowhere to be found. She walked over to the basketball
court, where she found her backpack jammed in the basketball hoop. Being a good climber,
she scurried up the pole and grabbed her backpack, then hopped down. However, when she reached into
her backpack, Karli stared in horror as she pulled out an unfamiliar item. It was Darla's
pencil case, once again in her possession! From across the playground, Karli noticed Darla
looking her way. Karli tried to quickly return the case to her backpack, but it was too late.
"Teacher!!!" Darla screeched, "Karli stole my pencil case again!!!" In a flash, one of
the teachers took Karli by the paw and dragged her to the principal's office.
She sat in the office, counting every drop of sweat that ran down her face. The young Zafara
was scared and sad. The principal would never believe her now. That's when she saw the
door creak open. Karli held her breath. Mr. Mickens walked in and sat in his chair.
Before he could say anything, his sweet secretary came in. She was a nice Shoyru
named Mrs. Palace.
Speaking softly, Mrs. Palace said, "Mr. Mickens, your order came in just now."
"Thank you!" Mr. Mickens responded. He stood up and received the big brown package,
then plopped back down in his chair and opened it. The only sound in the room was
the tearing of the paper. Karli gulped. What if it was a new paddle? Were
principals allowed to hit the students? To her relief, Karli saw it was only a few
small video cameras. That's when Karli got an idea...

...Taking a deep breath, Karli spoke to Mr. Mickens. "Um, excuse me, Sir?" she
asked as politely as possible. "What are those for?"
"Just a few security cameras I ordered for the school," Mr. Mickens said as he
placed them aside. "But never mind that. Karli, I'm very surprised at your
behavior lately. This is the second time you've come to my office today for
stealing. I don't think I've ever had that happen with any student, especially
not on their first day."
Karli sighed. "Mr. Mickens, I know what it looks like, but I'm telling you...
I didn't do anything! It was your son, Trevor!"
This time, it was Mr. Mickens's turn to sigh. "You're still not going on about
that, are you? Look, I know that Trevor may not be perfect, but I raised him to
be a good Grarrl and a good student."
"But Sir!" cried Karli. "He made fun of me, stole my lunch, and this afternoon,
his friends tied Sal and I to the tetherball pole! Then after class, he tripped me
on the stairs and planted the pencil case in my backpack! I think he's using
your role as the principal to his unfair advantage!" Karli immediately bit her
tongue. She couldn't believe she had just said that to the principal!
Still, it had to be said.
Mr. Mickens was silent as he heard this, then closed his eyes and sighed. "I'm
very sorry, Miss Karli, but you leave me no choice. I'm afraid you're going to
have to stay after school for detention."
Karli's eyes went wide. "D-detention?"
"Yes. I want you to report to room 105 after school lets out, and write 'I
will not steal from other students.' on the chalkboard one hundred times.
I'll be there to
keep an eye on you, and so will these," he said, patting one of the cameras.
Although upset about getting detention, Karli was glad this was working
out just the way she'd hoped.
* * * * *
I will not steal from other students
I will not steal from other students
I will not steal from other students
Karli's paw was sstarting to ache, yet she was only on her twentieth line.
Daring a glance
behind her, she saw Mr. Mickens sitting at the teacher's desk, doing paperwork.
Then, her eyes shifted towards the camera that had been installed in the corner of the
classroom. Luckily, it wasn't that noticeable. Please be here, she thought
to herself.
"Miss Karli," said Mr. Mickens suddenly. "I don't hear writing!" Karli snapped out
of her daydream and went back to her unfair punishment.
Just then, Trevor waltzed into the room, wearing a large grin on his face. "Hey
Pop!" he said.
"Hello, Trevor," replied Mr. Mickens. "Have a nice day?"
"Yeah, it was great! I've got all my homework with me. May I please work on it in here?"
Karli rolled her eyes as she listened to Trevor's mock politeness.
"That's fine, Trevor." Just then, Mr. Mickens stood from his seat. "I'm going to
go get a soda from the vending machine. Would you like one, son?"
"That'd be great, Dad!" smiled Trevor.
Mr. Mickens nodded. "Very well. You two children stay here, and I'll be right back."
As soon as Mr. Mickens left the room...

...Trevor started tearing his father's paperwork to shreds.
"H-hey! Stop that!" Karli exclaimed in a mock-terrified voice. "Mr. Mickens will
be mad at you!"
Trevor laughed coldly. "Mad at me? Not his sweet little Trevor! No, I'll tell him
you did it, because you were mad at him... because he made you do detention! You
also threatened that, if I tried to stop you, you'd do the same to me!"
Trevor cackled with an evil grin. "Oh yeah, I almost forgot!" The Grarrl pulled
out Darla's pencil case and slipped it in Karli's bag.
"You take that out of there Trevor, or I'll--"
"You'll do what? Tell my dad on me? Face it Karli, you're beat! You'll never be
able to prove that it was me!" Trevor hissed venomously.
Karli faked a petrified look.
"No Trevor! Please, you can't do this to me! Not again! I could get expelled if
you keep this up! Please, stop!" Karli whimpered. She tried to make her face
look as if she was going to cry.
"Aaaw! Is wittle Karwi going to cry?" Trevor said in a baby voice. He had a
nasty smirk on his face. "Well, maybe this will make her feel better!" Trevor
then took an eraser and started erasing the twenty lines that Karli had already done.
Karli was dumbfounded. She really hadn't expected that, but it would only help
her more.
Suddenly the doorknob started to turn.
"Gotta go act petrified now!" Trevor whispered to Karli as he slid into the
corner of the room and put on a scared face.
The door opened and in walked Mr. Mickens. He took one look around and his jaw
dropped, along with the sodas he had been carrying.
"DADDY! DADDY!" Trevor screamed as he ran towards his father. Somehow he had
managed to get tears in his eyes. "Daddy, when you left she--she..." Trevor burst
into tears and pretended he couldn't go on.
"It's okay Trevor. Daddy's here, and he won't let that awful Zafara scare you
anymore!" Mr. Mickens said as he gave Karli a nasty look.
"She went crazy! She started tearing up your papers and erased the chalkboard!
She also told me that she stole that poor little Darla's pencil case again! I
was too scared to stop her!" Trevor whined. He wiped away the fake tears and
hugged his father.
"It's okay Trevor, that nasty Zafara will have her well deserved reward," Mr.
Mickens muttered to his awful son. Then he turned towards Karli with a sour look on
his face. "You just don't seem to get it, do you? I've tried to tell you not to
steal, but you just keep getting worse! I'm sorry Karli, but I'm going to have to expe--"
"I DIDN'T DO IT!" Karli yelled before he could finish.
"My son said you did, and I believe him!"
"I'm sorry sir, but your son is a nasty little liar and thief! I know you won't
believe what I tell you, but you will believe what the cameras show. Go ahead,
check the cameras!" Karli exclaimed.
"C-cameras?" Trevor stuttered, his face now really full of fear. "You never told
me that installed cameras, Dad."
"Just got them today, Trevor. Why, is that a problem?" Mr. Mickens asked skeptically.
"No, not at all..."
The large Grarrl escorted the two pets down the hall and into a dark room. Upon
entering they could see many small glowing screens.
Mr. Mickens then got to work, rewinding a camera to where it showed
about ten minutes before.
There were a few minutes of Karli writing, Trevor coming in, Mr. Mickens going
to get some sodas, and then it happened. Trevor started being his real self.
"Daddy!" Trevor screamed. "It's not what you think! She made me!"
"How stupid do you think I am, Trevor? Detention, every day for the rest of
this year... and that doesn't even count what you'll be getting at home!"
Mr. Mickens cried with rage.
"I'll, I'll just let myself out," Karli said quietly aas she slipped past
the door. She felt what was going on was more of a father-son moment.
Karli waited all the way until she'd gotten out of the school, then started
cracking up.
"Did you get him?" Sal asked excitedly. Apparently she had been waiting for
Karli to come out.
The Zafara nodded; she couldn't talk, because she was laughing so hard.
"Great! So Karli, what do you have to say for yourself?" Sal said, mocking
Principal Mickens's voice.
"I have to say that I think I'm going to enjoy school from now on!"
