Pet Name: Myphelius
Owner: sophieninetyfive
Breed: Yurble

About Myphelius:
The Yurble exuded confidence as he ascended the stairs to the podium. Placing his notes on the lectern before him, he stared out at the small group of pets sitting before him. There were only three, which unnerved him a little. He'd expected a slightly larger audience.

No matter, he thought with a small smile. Audience or not, his presentation would surely be a success. He had been studying diligently for months. His notes were immaculately printed on expensive parchment, but he knew them back to front anyway. If the glasses perched on his nose weren't sign enough of his intelligence, this presentation certainly would be.

"What's your name?" asked the Gelert seated in front of him.

"Myphelius!" the Electric Yurble pronounced proudly. As he did so, he held his arms wide, as though he expected the word to stun the audience into silence, or send them into shrieks of excitement. As it was, the three simply nodded their heads and the Gelert scratched a note on the paper in front of him.

"Thank you, Myphelius. Now what have you got to say for us this morning?"

The Yurble cleared his throat and shuffled his notes. "Well," he began, "I've been doing an enormous amount of research over the past few months, and I can say with surety that Professor Firefoot's theory is undoubtedly correct – motes are living beings, made entirely of magical energy." He paused, waiting once more for the exclamations of surprise and awe. At the very least, they should have been whispering fervently to one another. Why were they staring up at him so curiously instead?

"Does – does this not astound you?" the Yurble asked uncertainly.

"It's very, uh, interesting, Myphelius," said the Usul sitting to the left of the Gelert. "But what does it have to do with your application to the Pet Spotlight?"

Myphelius gaped at him. "The what?"

"The Pet Spotlight. Were you unaware? This is Auditorium 38A. Pet Spotlight auditions are held here every Friday afternoon."

"38A?" Myphelius yelped. "I'm supposed to be in 38B! I've a most important presentation to give – it could cost me my whole career as a scholar!" He seized his notes up in a frenzy, succeeding only in scattering them all to the floor.

"Wait," said the third judge, a Kacheek. "You're here already – why not audition anyway? It can't hurt to give it a try."

"Yes, come on, Myphelius," said the Usul encouragingly. "Tell us a little bit about yourself."

The flustered Yurble, scrambling to pick up his notes, smacked his rather prominent nose on the lectern as he stood. "Ouch! – I mean, um..." He cleared his throat nervously. "You must forgive me. I'm not usually quite such a poor speaker. In fact, quite the opposite. I am, in fact, quite the scholar."

"Is that so?" said the Kacheek with a smile. "What exactly does that involve?"

"Well, I'm an apprentice of sorts to the King of Brightvale. Not directly, of course – he probably doesn't even know my name – but I'm working with several other scholars on a particularly delicate project involving motes. You see, it's been thought for a long time that they're more than weapons; that they have personalities, emotions, and so forth. They're clearly living beings, but how exactly they sustain themselves is not yet known."

"How interesting!" the Kacheek chirped.

"No, it's not," the Gelert argued. "Studying is dull. What else do you do, Myphelius?"

"Erm... well." Here the Yurble faltered once more. "My work is very time-consuming; it's terribly important, you understand, and I can hardly afford to take time off..."

"So all you do is research?" demanded the Gelert. He did not sound impressed.

Myphelius winced. "No!" he protested. "I do other things too. I... I..." He scrambled desperately for something to say. "I help Illusen with her Quests!"

The Gelert raised an eyebrow. "Do you, now?" he asked.

Myphelius blushed. "Yes," he mumbled. "She's just – she's so caring, and she takes care of everyone in Meridell. She's awfully kind. It's the least I can do for her, really."

The Gelert leaned back in his seat and grinned. "Well, master Myphelius, I'll admit I never would have believed it. You seemed awfully arrogant when you strode in here, shuffling your notes with your nose in the air. But you're not actually such a bad sort, are you?"

The Yurble shrugged bashfully, then smiled. "No, sir... not once you get to know me."
